Here are some key takeaways from this roundtable at #HAC2024.
The Role of Behavioral Science in HR Excellence
Transforming Teams and Cultivating Values Through Behavioral Science
The panel discussion that followed featured HR experts Frédéric Thoral (Head of HR at BNP Paribas Personal Finance), Nathalie Levy Lafon (VP Global HR at Lacoste), and Antoine Ferrere (Global Head of Behavioral Science at Novartis). Together, they explored how behavioral science can be applied to transform teams and instil shared values within organizations.
Frédéric Thoral opened the discussion by highlighting the importance of cultural transformation within organizations. He explained that behavioral science provides powerful tools to understand team dynamics and embed shared values that drive both engagement and performance. He stressed the critical role of leadership in this transformation: “Leaders must embody the values they want to see reflected in their teams.”
Nathalie Levy Lafon focused on the role of psychological safety in the workplace. To foster this safety, it is essential to celebrate individual differences while maintaining a collective framework. “Diversity in talent is a strength, and collaboration can only succeed if it’s built on respect for that diversity,” she said.
Finally, Antoine Ferrere discussed the importance of using behavioral data to create high-performing work environments. By analyzing this data, organizations can identify tension points within teams and take proactive steps to address them before they escalate into conflict. “Innovation comes from diverse perspectives, and behavioral science helps ensure those voices are heard and appreciated,” Ferrere emphasized.
The Importance of Psychological Safety in the Workplace
Both Kim Scott and the panelists repeatedly touched on the concept of psychological safety—the ability of team members to take intellectual risks without fearing negative consequences. In such an environment, employees feel free to share ideas, ask questions, and admit mistakes without fear of retribution.
Behavioral science plays a crucial role in measuring and improving psychological safety by identifying biases and promoting inclusive cultures. As Antoine Ferrere pointed out, behavioral data can be used to spot early signs of tension and enable leaders to intervene before those issues turn into more significant problems.
Human-Centered Change Management: A Shared Vision
The panel discussions shared a common vision for human-centered change management in organizations, one rooted in three key pillars: transparency, respect, and the use of behavioral science. Together, these elements help create workplaces where people feel valued, and organizations can adapt more effectively to change.
As Frédéric Thoral pointed out, “Change must come from the top, but it must also be embraced at every level of the organization.” Ensuring that every employee understands and aligns with the organization’s values is essential for fostering a sense of belonging and commitment.
